I generally like 80s/90s Russian music a lot, both rock and pop, it's of unexpectedly high quality, including technical details of recordings. When I compare that to Polish music from the same era there is a huge gap, Soviet bands sound just like western ones.

yeah, they give me really that cozy 1980s feeling, definitely best decade for popculture

80's and 90's have been extremely transformative years both from a cultural, geopolitical, economic and technological standpoint with some spill over to the 2000's. Only now has it settled down to a rather stale state.

i agree but actually im not sure if it could be directly related to music, i think it's more like coincidence
remember that this whole cultural and geopolitical shift was mostly experienced by eastern europeans but for westerners or thirdies the world was just evolving gradually, it wasn't such a sudden change for them like for us so they didn't really need to have that reflected in their music
especially that the coolest music comes from the 80s when the end of the cold war wasn't actually seen as close, it happened really unexpectedly and rapidly.

true
i think this music vid shows that kind of shift in russia:
https://youtu.be/DtdLwNYOVVQ?list=RDDtdLwNYOVVQ
it came out somewhere like in 2002-03 when nu metal era was almost a dead guy on the west but in russia it is (well from 2001-2004. so guess it was also short as fuck) the golden era of it.
Anonymous Poland No.214248782
>>214248706
some, but for some reason i find Polish music from that era much less interesting than Soviet or Yugoslav. Idk, maybe it's just my "looking-for-exoticness bias". But I hardly have any Polish 80s songs I periodically return to, while I have a lot of Soviet/Yugo ones.

Yeah, I asked my parents about it. Father went from government approved musician to getting piss wasted wearing a punk outfit in 4 years, eventually this addiction to alcohol killed him but at least he had to experience some wild years.

We are highly lacking in alternative music for that time period and in the contemporary one as well. All we had is mostly following the pop slop and some good rap.

I gues our communist government allowed more freedom for subcultures so punks, skins, metals etc. were already a common thing in the 1980s.

They even allowed wild shit like this

Arya is really cool, so sad it's seen as kinda cringe today, they should have probably stopped making new songs in the 2000s.

The Russian game I posted here >>214250574 is completely composed of instrumental Ariya songs, it is also a cult classic for all of us 30's here. Back then we thought it was a Lithuanian game due to the voice overs and translations, Akelotฤ— & Ko would have been our CDProjeckt but they got btfo for publishing Russian and foreign games without a license.

i may be wrong but i think ive heard this one on youtube a lot of time ago
there's actually a lot of bands who stopped their career (including by their wish) in 90s or haven't got any attention at all
https://youtu.be/zUfh14l31tQ?list=RDzUfh14l31tQ (this band actually evolved onto industrial one:
https://youtu.be/ZNP_WD-pUEM?list=RDZNP_WD-pUEM
thats what i meant by "by their wish")
https://youtu.be/LkQI0VzvlqY?list=RDLkQI0VzvlqY (heard about them a lot of how they're underrated. havent listened to the album fully though)
https://youtu.be/fF5oAbiiFns (russian ebm)
https://youtu.be/vxH6GbiHzHY?list=RDvxH6GbiHzHY (not an abandoned one, although leader is not with us anymore. just to wanted to remind myself of this classic)

it was always a mystery how the USSR had so many good bands in the 1980s with such limited access to western culture, after all the only western tapes of popular bands (which were almost all on the infamous index of forbidden bands) could be smuggled only illegally and foreign radio stations were jammed. And access to western music trends is one thing, another one is access to modern musical instruments, I can't even imagine how an average Soviet rabotyaga could afford an electric guitar, let alone a Casio synthesizer.
