The police in Bahia alone kill more people than the US security forces. According to the Brazilian Public Security Yearbook, 1,699 people were killed by police officers in the state in 2023, while a survey conducted by UOL shows that the US recorded 1,164 deaths in the same period.
This means that police officers in Bahia kill 32 times more people than their counterparts in the United States, when population size is taken into account. Bahia has been governed by the left-wing PT party since 2007.
