And how exactly would we have accomplished that against a standing army of over 12 million men in 1945? It would have taken months to develop more nuclear weapons even if we didn't nuke Japan, the Red Army could have pushed America off the continent in that time.

Americans are quite terrible soldiers, we've all seen their miserable performance on the Western front (Battle of the Bulge, where Nazi cripples and 15 year olds defeated elite American soldiers with the casualty rate like 4:1) and their inability to defeat weak and resource-starved Japan for 4 years. Americans are a proud nation of businessmen and stock speculators, but fighting wars is clearly not their thing (see WW2 Pacific front, Korean war, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc). They have lost pretty much everywhere.
