An example is a letter written by the Marshal to a Polish princess in 1914. In it, Mannerheim reflects on the forces behind the wars as follows:
"Behind all this are the Jews and material interests. Countries are being destroyed and the borders of empires are being changed, but the Jews always benefit from all this."
Teivainen argues that this quotation embodies anti-Semitism in its classic form, in which the Jews are seen as the rulers of the world and as a greedy group profiting from its destruction. Later thinking emphasised the role of Jews in Bolshevism and the Soviet Union.
- In correspondence with Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Jews are mentioned as 'waving the marshal's staff' behind the Soviet Union. Mannerheim states that 'yes, we are all becoming tools in the hands of the Jews'. His letters contained all sorts of anti-Semitic formulations," says Teivainen.
Teivainen points out that despite the harsh formulations, no direct conclusion can be drawn that Mannerheim was an anti-Semite and remained so. His thinking became much more critical of the National Socialist anti-Semitism of the 1930s.
