The PLC collapsed exactly because the majority of their population was Orthodox Ruthenians. It wasn't the only reason, but the most crucial one though. If they added Russians to their population, the percentage of Orthodox Slavs would be even higher and the commonwealth would collapse harder. Or East Slavs would just assimilate everyone else as it happened to the Rurikid dynasty, for example.
