Fighting in wars was always a meme. Your best case scenario was ancient/medieval warfare, where you at least stood a chance to get some spoils for risking your life. You're doing something evil, might as well go all the way. Every other aspect of it is fighting in someone else's conflict on behalf of leaders who aren't really on your side and aren't your friends.

Never happened. In actual battle it mostly used by the desperate soldiers who lost their primary weapons and the fight mostly ended in seconds in most anticlimatic way possible (the sworman getting impaled by a polearm)
