And somehow this was all coordinated by a bigger superior force (who this might be, you don't mention)
Couldn't it be that communism and islamic movements are mutually exclusive (one seeks to abolish religion & property rights, while the other wants to expand religion & enforce property rights)
In the end, the balance of powers in Iran inclined with the islamists, because the proletariat in Iran was weak and because socialism world wide had its reputation tarnished by the Stalinist bureaucracy (invasion of afghanistan)
