Kanbun. You can't read books prior to the 20th century without learning classical Chinese. Unfortunately it's harder to learn than latin and is barely intelligible with modern Chinese. Also to read anything prior to the 17th century raw you need some highly specialized training because this was before Kangxi radicals were introduced.
