What do you think of population control?

Bad idea. Most countries are already starting to have problems with a declining birth rate and old people starting to take up a larger share of the population.

But the reason we have so many old people in the first place is because of overpopulation. You are creating a negative spiral here

The problem isn't the number of old people, it's their number in proportion to the number of younger people. If there aren't enough babies every year getting born to keep everything going then eventually the whole system collapses in on itself.

It's not exclusive to capitalism. Even under socialism or communism or whatever other economic system they'd still rely on the number of people entering the workforce per year being higher than the number of people leaving.
All of human society relies on constant upkeep and maintenance and expansion and the more people who take from society but don't contribute, the more of a strain it puts on said society.

I once read a book about the role of the chinese government and the chinese economic developmeent. Where some economist advisor to the Shanghai government said there still alot of underutilized land (farm land) in shanghai, and how it would be better if they just whole sale it to developers to build apartments since this was at the height of the real estate bubble. I wonder what would he say now.

It wasn't to that extent. Modern economy is just straight bullshit, when some people who do absolutely nothing receive tons of money, but real workers aren't being taught by their superiors and receive nothing. The infrastructure will be dead soon.
I'm not saying that muh communism is good. But it should tend more toward socialism where such things should be more controlled and regulated by the government or subsidised at the least.

Medium population mid tier city suburbs are the sweet spot. Bonus points if it's a semi-rural suburb with lots of nature. Many such cases out west. A lot of it is empty and full of cities that are just big enough to do financially well and thrive but not attract big development.

I agree it's unsustainable if kept to this planet, but eventually if we don't drive ourselves extinct we will colonize the solar system and other star systems and most of us will live in space in colony ships o algo así. We will have a near limitless supply of resources if we ever manage to make asteroid mining viable.
