I don't have a car yet, but public transport sucks so much I want to get one
I'm thinking about buying a used small car, something like pic related, 5-10 years old with less than 100.000km of mileage
those are still 6.000-8.000β¬ here used
I don't even know how to register it etc., but I feel not having a car is one part of why I still feel like a kid

Everything on it works as original, down to the little blue vacuum fluorescent display for the compass that's built into the rear view mirror.

Boot is non-existent with the rear seats up.
A large full backpack won't let you close the rear hatch if you put it behind the seats. and If you put the rear seats in the "fully reclined" position without the headrest you can put your head against the rear glass.
I do have the factory rubber mat that you cover the rear seats when folded and it's made from very soft supple grippy rubber so shit doesn't slide all over the place while breaking.
Proper full expedition roof rack (with a mesh "floor") is a must if you need to travel with more than one passanger and some luggage.

New car value has zero meaning here. The moment a car rolls of the floor, it's dropped 30-35% in value. Each year after that, it keeps dropping significantly.
At least here in Sweden until you reach veteran-car age (30 years or older) at which point the car is tax free and much cheaper to insure and only need inspection every 2 years (no inspection after 50 years). But everything between brand new and veteran age is basically worthless here. You're buying a modern car, that's used, paying full price for insurance, hoping it's in good enough condition to pass inspection and.... Not worth a lot.

There's one sitting on every street, there's a lot of replacement parts, taxes and insurance are fairly cheap, these can easily do over 500k km, if the boomer owner let it get serviced every 2 years or so.
You can get a good one with leather interior and a sunroof for under 2k.

Also Sweden seems like a chill country in terms of their regulations on cars. Is this true? Especially compared to the UK where you canβt really modify your car much at all. Also low fees compared to other European countries.

i work for a logistics department that uses a lot of non-commercial vehicles due to small load size. Toyota holds up to severe abuse and breaks in predictable ways. Ford is the same but with a tendency towards inexplicable failures and gremlins. Despite the gremlins, Fords can make it to 500,000km over a relatively short period used in a commercial application. Say 500k in ~5-7 years. I wouldn't trust a Ford to make it that high without serious mechanical intervention at 15+ years. Others:
Chrysler can hang in
Mazda cannot
We don't have any Hondas because Toyota is a better deal in that segment.
