I had to interview hundreds of people in trailer parks in rural Georgia when I worked for the federal government. It's a miserable place, all of them. There was a rare trailer that had been taken care of, but I saw some with plywood floors, one light inside, no AC despite it being 95 degrees and humid, dirty, no appliances. People walking around drinking shirtless, stray/loose dogs running around, one person in my crew was attacked by a pack of dogs even. The roads to these places were sometimes nothing but washboarded dirt that would melt into mud during the rainy season. I saw crooked men in greasy torn wifebeaters flailing around with bowie knives and bottles of whiskey, aimless in their frustration and misery. The women were all tired, mostly mothers without a man in the home, with a suspicious energy to them as though they themselves had committed some unknowable act against God. Truly the most wretched places in all of America.
