Food that europeans got wrong
>be me, 18, American
>work with many central and eastern europeans
>hungarian coworker invites me to his apartment
>says he will make goulash for me, the national dish of hungary
>Oh boy! My dad makes that all the time!
>Show up at his place, he opens a bottle of wine, but I don't drink because I'm not 21 yet
>brings out a boiling hot pot of beef stew with carrots
>him "Bon apetit!"
>me "... what is this?"
>him "goulash!"
>me "No, goulash is macaroni noodles with ground beef and cheese"
>he is speechless, must not have known he was making it wrong his whole life
>I tell him everything wrong with it
>"There's no cheese, no macaroni noodles, and the beef is too chunky!"
>pick the carrots out of my bowl and put them into a napkin
>he is seething the whole time
>finish my food and go home
>"thanks for the beef stew!"

We didn't hang out after that

I can kind of see where this originated. In Germany, the standard side dish for goulash is noodles (either SpΓ€tzle or Spiralnudeln). In contrast to other places where it is commonly served with various forms of potato or even without a side.

But cheese in goulash would be just considered weird here.

Um... Is it normal to just invite a homie over to your place and offer them a slef-cooked meal with wine?
