also, competitions are not inherently fun for everyone. This kind of thing is about pushing kids and normalizing the effort that goes into studying all the time so they can be a doctor or lawyer ect. Not how it always ends up turning out but I’m pretty sure thats the idea around it.
that said, there are also more casual spelling bees, or were. In elementary school I remember there were class spelling bees a few times.
