Do any of you have experience teaching your children a foreign language that isn't native to your country? I was thinking of learning Mandarin and raising future children of mine by speaking it in the house.

My kid speaks Swedish and French on toddler levels so that will continue I guess.
Which means I will need to learn French better myself..

come on, work with me here. I've been thinking about how I would go about it, and I was wondering if anons grew up in such a household or if they have any experience doing this.

Does your partner speak French? I've been watching videos and reading articles about how in some households each parent speaks a different language with the child so they can develop different language skills.

my parents didn't teach me or my brother their native language. I think this is due to them just being really stupid people. I wish they had put effort into trying.

Learning mandarin with your kids seems like it would be a great deal of fun and very worthwhile. I think you should do it.

My gf is French yep. I can speak/understand really basic French but the moment the tempo goes above "talking to a retard" I fail completely.
But I will be taking classes and she will help me as well.
And English goes without saying, kid will learn that real quick both at home and in school.

I'm single atm and have never been on a date, however I'm curious about future endeavors.

Do you have conversations with your gf in English or Swedish?

No, it's a question about future events that might happen. I'm thinking about how I might raise a future child to develop valuable skills. I figured I'd ask this on /int/ as it's probably the board with the most amount of polyglots.

When it's just us two it's mostly English. It's what we spoke when we met and we're both comfortable speaking it.
Around our families we try to use only the native tongues. She's better at Swedish than I am at French so she's got me there.
But with the little one it's a mix of all the above.
We're not sure yet where we are gonna actually live (right now in a shitty apartment in Kristianstad - Sweden) so teaching the kid everything seems like the best option right now.

From what I've seen online, couples have the most success when one parent has a designated language where they speak with the child. Do you have trouble with getting them to differentiate which language is being spoken? Like if you as a question in English and they respond in Swedish.

Yeah, that did happen at first. I guess the concept kids care about when they start talking.
But he's getting better at it. If we're speaking one language, he usually does as well. And doesn't really struggle switching anymore.
But then again, kids are sponges before their teens and just absorb knowledge. I think it's more about setting rules.
>when mom and dad is speaking xx language, you speak xx language
And so on.

I guess my own English is failing me now..

As a child I learned three languages which I still speak to this day. Children's brains are basically programmed to learn new languages, however, input is very important as well. Is your kid gonna learn this language then forget it over time?

All of the three languages I learned as a kid, I had a significant amount of exposure to and the one I have the weakest proficiency in as an adult I even heard daily growing up.

There's an estimated one or two thousand, out of a total Esperanto-speaking population of a few hundred thousand (maybe a few tens of thousands if you only count very high-level speakers, probably a few million if you count those with only a basic level).

Just make sure your kid speaks English first and foremost, the language it actually needs to succeed socially and academically. If your kid is immersing all day in Chinese, that's time taken away from immersing in English and it could lag behind the other kids. You need to balance the time and pay attention to their language level. Even if your kid is a genius in Chinese, everyone is going to think its retarded because it can't follow basic instructions and lacks common vocabulary.

I would ideally plan on enrolling them in classes or giving them books so they can write reports on it.
