The Ostmark Germans suddenly deciding they are no longer Germans was actually brilliant. They basically out-jewed the jews. A lot of nazi leadership (including Hitler himself) was Austrian, but by pulling the whole, "We're totally not German, guys!" they largely avoided the whole jewish reparations bullshit.
I kinda wish they had just completely dissolved the whole thing into German microstates in general after 1945. "Germany" without the Prussian state idea is basically a brain-dead walking corpse of a former nation, and that whole accursed state nowadays exists exclusively to siphon money to Israel and to brown people.
