Americans don't want the rich and ultra rich to be taxed equitably to the benefit of everyone in society. The want the rich to continuing screwing them over.
I've seen Americans from the poor and ultra poor absolutely refuse to support any initiative to tax the wealthy to the benefit of people their class because they have a schizophrenic delusion that they themselves are one year away or so from joining the ultra wealthy.

During Cold War American proletariat was given a decent standard of living to inb4 Soviet agitation.
Also America isn't really a uniform country the different races represent effectively different nations with the United States which represents a cleavage that cannot be overcome for class based action. There is a deliberate strategy by companies to keep the workplace as diverse as possible since it prevents unions from forming when you have nothing in common with your coworkers.
The educated middle class who typically form the political leadership for left wing movements completely abandoned labor politics and openly resent the racist white uneducated hicks who represent the bulk of American working class and peasantry. Honestly it's partly strategy on their part to create fake jobs about managing and enforcing diversity and equity in the workplace for themselves.
Amongst the haute bourgeoisie proper there is the Jewish Zionist merchant elite who are dominant with the Anglo WASP elite in a Junior role. The goals and motivations of the former go much further than just wealth accumulation which is the sole motivation for the latter.

Taxes are unAmerican. Pragmatically speaking, however, the wealthy have a level of mobility that the average person does not. They don't have to stay in a place where they are taxed to a degree that they do not agree with. If you tax them too heavily, they will just leave and then you don't get anything from them at all.

Poor Americans are extremely retarded. Some of them ardently believe in the mindset that if they just need to work more, so taxes are a way of keeping them down, combined with a sometimes poor understanding of tax brackets and having never filed their own taxes leads them to believe they're getting ripped off despite not even making the standard deduction.
The foundations of American sociey are also somewhat anti-government and this has been a persistent force in American politics since conception.

Fact of the matter is we could confiscate the wealth of every billionaire and we wouldn't even be able to use it to run the government by the year. Ultimately, the desire for rich men to get more rich drives growth.

Increasing income tax disproportionately targets the middle and upper middle classes which people really dont want. when people say tax the rich they are talking about elon musk and peter thiel types, not their family doctor. the truly wealthy typically have relatively modest "incomes" so if you are trying to get them to pay their fair share you have to target their wealth directly which leads me to
2. taxing wealth is basically impossible when the value of the wealth is intangible and the very act of forcing someone to sell drives its value down. this in turn makes it very inefficient and wipes value from the economy
