They have a Fields medal (pure mathematics), which is a better prize. (after the Brazilian guy won, they held the ceremony in Brazil next time. In typical Brazilian fashion, the winner that year actually had his medal stolen off the table or something, and so the prize committee arranged for a second copy to be made and be re-given to the non-Brazilian winner next time). Also, I don't give a shit about soccer but they place high value on soccer and they have a bunch of world cups, so they're good at a popular activity that they value (despite 7-1, which I happened to see live and was very funny).
The Nobel is a sham prize. The peace prize has been awarded to people like Arafat, Kissinger, Obama and other warmongers, and the prize in medicine was recently given to two or three people who worked on the covid vaccine. Bob Dylan got the literature prize. Although some good work is still recognized in the hard sciences, they've done much to undermine their overall credibility over the past 30+ years or so.
