we have no nickname culture
in south korea, calling someone by a nickname is considered extremely rude
but i've heard that china and chinese-speaking states have a nickname culture similar to that in latin america
for example, "ling ling" and "mei mei" are nicknames

westerners vaguely believe that south korea, china, and japan share similar cultures, but that's simply not true
china, while a communist, authoritarian country, is in some ways far more open and less conservative than south korea or japan
south korea and japan are extremely conservative in their interpersonal relationships
our culture is entirely hierarchical, with hierarchical relationships and highly specialized honorifics
in south korea or japan, even a single mistake in using honorifics incorrectly among acquaintances or family can result in a severe reprimand

Nicknames are useful when there is more than one person of the same name. At my work the boss was Cameron (guy) and there was another worker named Cameron (girl), everyone just naturally defaulted to calling the guy Cam and the girl Cameron

we never refer to our parents by their first names

No middle names either, right?
I'm named after my dad, so I used to go by my middle name in my very, very early years. But then in kindergarden the teacher noticed and said
>No, people should call you by your first name. Everyone, please call anon by his name
And I've been using my first name ever since
I'm glad because I feel like I dodged a bullet. I don't dislike my middle name, but life is easier when you just use your first name

i often believe that the reason south koreans and japanese feel less happy, more conservative, and more stubborn than other east asians is because of our honorific culture
because we live in a culture where honorifics are extremely hierarchically structured, interpersonal relationships are constantly tense and stressful
our culture leaves no room for relaxation

Traditionally, we used to add suffixes to given names, but no one does it anymore, most of them became surnames
Jean -> Jeannot
Suzanne -> Suzette
Jacques - Jacquot

There are others diminutives that are shortened forms of the names and are actual given names or surnames, but it still rare
Frédéric -> Ferry
Robert -> Robin
Médéric -> Merry

It's a bit cringe but close people may call each other by duplicating one syllable
Lucie -> Lulu
Noé -> Nono
Joseph -> Jojo

If it's a compound name, you can keep the first part of the name and cut at the first syllable of the second part
Marie-José -> Marie-Jo
Jean-Michel -> Jean-Mi
Anne-Sophie -> Anne-So

But you can just replace a compound name by its initials
Jean-Pierre -> JP
Pierre-Alexis -> PA
Jean-Marie -> JM

But yeah, we don't really use diminutives anymore
