Today I learned that Salt and Pepper doesn't count as seasonings for non-nordics. It is just assumed you have it along with other things.

Seasoning doesn't refer to spices but rather to the balance bewteen salty/acid/sour/sweet flavors.

One confusing thing about English is herb vs. spice. Feel like not even native speakers keep it straight a lot of the time and call herbs spices.

that is the bare minimum for most things, yeah
imagine thinking salt is a seasoning, it's implied from the very start

i don't think this is true. i've never heard someone confuse a herb for a spice or vice versa

Forgot what made me think of it originally, but get quite a lot of hits for "oregano and other spices" and stuff: "Each Italian mix balances the taste of thyme, oregano and other spices for a full-bodied seasoning"

Maybe someone couldn't be bothered to type out "herbs and spices" there though.
