Read an adaptation if you want. The original text is dense and starts after the whole story, goes back to the start of the universe as a story within a story and spends a third of the book talking about all the history leading up to the main story. Very confusing for someone unfamiliar.

It's a genuinely good story tho. William Buck's easy to read adaptation is on internet archive
