I used to think Finland was cool but the more I learned about it the more I realized it's one of the fakest countries on earth. Finland only exists because a bunch of Swedes living in Russia decided they wanted independence and with the help of the Swedish crown created the idea of a Finnish people to justify separating from Russia. Since then everything about Finnish culture has been manufactured to sell the myth that Finns are their own unique people. Even their "traditional" folklore like the Kalevala is literally just fan fiction written by a Swede in the mid 1800s, but the way Finns treat it you'd think it was over 1000 years old like Beowulf.

Finland is like if all the Mexicans living in California suddenly decided California was its own unique entity and declared independence from the US, deeming themselves to be Californians rather than Mexicans or Americans. Everything which had already existed within California up to that point was then declared to be part of Californian culture.

I think it's more likely that Finland and the Finns themselves feel confused about their own identity. Finns are so deeply intertwined with Sweden and Russia that it's difficult to distinguish between them and the Swedes. In fact, the only difference between them and the Swedes is language.
