The Brits were making Hong Kong action movies/Wuxia and promoting Bruce Lee until the 1990s. China ended their soft power golden age then for like 2 decades all people thought about China was really poor people in factories and subsistence farmers. Whatever soft power is it's extremely fickle and gets memoryholed constantly. When I watch anime from the 80s I can't believe it's purported to be part of the same industry that mills out isekai and harem slop. Seriously where did all of the space operas, high crime drama, and gore go? Even Elfen Lied feels alien to modern anime.
