Early on I checked out a few textbooks but didn't stick with them. I read Czech step by step at least, it was alright
For beginner CI and interviews
https://youtube.com/@slowczech
Street interviews with native speakers on simple topics
https://youtube.com/@easyczechvideos
Grammar explained in English. After reading about the basics I like this more, she gives a lot of context textbooks didn't
https://youtube.com/@czechbyzuzka
Outside of those I just listen to a bunch of native content. Anything I'd usually do I do in Czech if it's available
For practice
https://www.czechonline.org/ and Duolingo (it's not bad if you learn the concepts somewhere else)
I use anki a bit but I have a hard time remembering words out of context. For learning new words I wait until I've heard them enough times in native content to recognize them, then look them up. Usually takes more than once for it to stick but it works

>Many language teachers or tutors [actually] discourage it
If you can teach yourself a language, then they'd be out of a job. Of course they won't actively recommend something that makes them obsolete.
Arguelles is a famous polyglot and he's a big fan of them.

they seem fine. Alexander Arguelles is known for loving those, they just give a solid start to the language with some dialogues to study, some grammar, idiom explanations and a bit of culture explanations, and high quality audio. the audio quality seemed to be a selling point in the past, compared to other coursebooks with more scuffed audio (according to Arguelles), but doesn't stand out as much nowadays with all the audio available online

Aw… probably comes from the verve “assimiler”. I found a pdf with 50 pages online for free although internet archive may have a full version.
Books are good but lack audio support, that’s why you need to be organized and do : grammar (after a certain level not beginning), cards with sound, alphabet and repeat it to familiarize with how it sounds… I’m still in my beginnings (don’t judge!)

Wish more languages used this format for their books
Are my goals achievable ?
French native.
Romanian (A2) - based but seems hard
Italian (no idea what level yet b it unfortunately sister lives there so I am forced to learn) :(
German (A2 or B1 if I can grind it)
Magyar nyelv (A1) OR Slovak OR Czech (A1).
Like these cultures so idk yet which one to prioritize.

yes, accepting A1-B1 level is more realistic than trying to be fluent in so many languages. this is probably the level a lot of youtube "polyglots" actually are

What's even the point of aiming for these arbitrary low levels? Anything below B2 is practically useless and basically only exists to syphon money from exam takers.

Aiming high is scary as a beginner and I also like too many languages at once. So either I stick with one (German/useful VS other language less useful) or you try one at a time …and then, decide which one you actually want to do. That’s what I think. All languages are difficult, so if you don’t know how fast you learn and at what pace or consistency, it’s best to stick with a lower level first. Unless someone tells me the opposite

Not too surprised… never been to Germany myself, I heard they are cold etc. I have a great uncle who lives in a house in Bavaria with no children, if it weren’t for them I wouldn’t care about the country. Depends how many hours you put each day too, because languages that are level 4 need constant studying. 45 minutes is considered nothing

the stereotypes about germany and germans are mostly true, which makes it frustrating. my mother is a german, but very americanized. I can sense her frustration with the way germans are. we usually visit germany every summer for a family reunion and it's a logistical nightmare because half of the relatives plan their vacations like two years ahead of time. there is just no concept of spontaneity. I am still learning german because of the family connection and because i just find it challenging.

They do kind of lean into each other gramatically and sometimes in vocabulary and your wires might get crossed. I bet if you spoke Portuguese and Spanish this would be even more so the case.

Yeah I had some idea of what helped me learn a language already, I think it does help. Most important thing to me is not to over translate things in your head. Think in words of your TL as soon as you can. And try not to fight against the different structure of the language. I've seen some beginner videos with subtitles in broken English, but it's broken on purpose to be a more direct translation. It helps me to think in broken English like that when I need to fill in the blanks trying to use my TL

Hebrew and Irish have some similar grammar and sentence formation so I would reccomend brushing up on your Irish first to get a good base for Hebrew. Why Afrikaans and not just Dutch? Once you learn a language with a certain set of features, any other language with those features becomes easier, so French, Russian, Serbo-Croatian and German will all complement each other very well, order won't really matter but to follow the same concept as with Irish before Hebrew, you would probably want to do French -> German -> Russian/Serbo-Croatian. Very nice list you've got, is it purely practical? If you'd like more sort of linguistic experience I'd get more differences, main one would be to get a verb-final language in there, you've already got Irish for verb initial and English for verb medial so that would be useful to have, maybe Turkish, Japanese, Farsi, or any other verb final language. Also a bigger variety of scripts, Hebrew would give you an RTL and an Abjad at the same time, I would personally include a chinese character using language, so any variety of chinese or japanese. I would also, personally, suggest Arabic over Hebrew. It's got WAY more speakers, WAY more places to visit, an actually working abjad, and if you learn MSA (which I reccomend), you also get a VERY standardised grammar set, which is really useful. Plus, if you get into it a bit, i'm not even joking, you can straight up read like 60%-80% of Hebrew words, bowever you wont understand anything spoken, unless it's biblical hebrew. And if you for some reason are learning hebrew for liturgical reasons then I'd be interested to hear how /where. Finally I want to say, crucially, PRACTICE SPEAKING. It is so much more effective than hours of reading and listening.
Go raibh slí socair suas romhat a chara.

Italian is a quite neat language. Simple phonology, regular grammar, familiar to English or other romance language speakers vocabulary. phonetic spelling also.

I don't feel like German has any unique challenges at least. The case system is tiny, often redundant. The verbs are also not that hard. Italian verbs are trickier. Phonology is probably harder, but not by much, because it is quite close to English.
Vocabulary and usage is going to challenge you the most I feel.
That's of course for learning to say uneven B1/B2. To master a language is another thing and German is notorious for filtering people.
>>214618190
> German is notorious for filtering people.
Not sure what you mean by this :/
I had no idea about Italian verbs… honestly if I were to go to Italy, would make sense to learn it.
German has the CH/SCH sounds that are a bit tricky (as a francophone/anglophone).
Your language is so difficult that I guess maybe other languages aren’t as much. I really want to learn at least A1 in a Slavic language but I need to focus on Italian or German (more useful). I also find German don’t care if you learned their language which is a bit sad
>>214618543
Goals :
Italian A2 or more if I’m motivated enough
German A1/A2
A Slavic language A1 + if I’m motivated and good enough to continue

"Fun" is when difficulty meats your capability and you can sense on a very real level that you can make progress in whatever you're doing. Most common issue is you're using dogshit methods, or you're just not sticking with it long enough to see results. Once you can establish a feedback loop of doing [something] and it leading to results, it starts being very easy to do the work, you start craving it even.

A2 is ok if you're just visiting a country for a weeks I guess. However aiming at Italian A2 as francophone feels downright criminal. If you speak with an Italian in simple language you might already converse on this level.
Also It's a little easier to somewhat comfortable with German, before trying a Slavic language.

Instead of telling women how to actually spot manipulative behaviour, they will just claim that age gaps are always bad and all problems are solved now. Yet these same people completely deny that unrestricted casual sex and literally whoring yourself out can have any negative effect on your ability to form meaningful relationships. Worse yet, many of them outright encourage this type of behaviour.
It's just that they are miserable and want to ruin relationships between consenting adults. They never cared about helping anyone. Everyone should just be as miserable as they are.

I aim lower because I’m mainly not sure how I learn, that’s why // I’m actually slow and need repetition, homework and constant listening/speaking/writing to be able to feel good and continue. I agree with German easier to start with since they have a bit more cases whereas Slavic languages have at least 7. Unless you’re okay with starting at a high level.
I won’t go higher than A2 Italian only since I’m not obsessed with it (for now)

Complexity of German language is spread out among various aspects of the language. That means you can approach the language from any angle, and as long you feel progress and it brings you closer to having a comprehensible input routine, you're golden.
It's a bit like English in this respect and many learnt English without any system. Myself included. As a kid many times I began to read or watch something, only to find out it's only partially translated or dubbed into Ukrainian or Russian. But curiosity kept gnawing and I continued in English even if when I didn't understand good half of what's conveyed.
My hunch would be to start with Pimsleur German and to scan through past /lang/ threads for mentions of German.

Is it bad practice to have subtitles while listening, if both the audio and subtitles are in your TL? I can read fine, but processing a spoken sentence takes too long and by the end of it they've moved onto the next sentence. I feel like I need subtitles but also that I might depend on them too much

It's like training wheels. It's fine and a valid way to improve your listening, but at some point you'll need to try listening without subtitles too.
>processing a spoken sentence takes too long and by the end of it they've moved onto the next sentence
You can try listening to youtube videos/podcasts at 0.75x speed to give you a little more time.
Another tip, on Youtube you can hit "c" to show/hide the subtitles. So you can focus on listening and bring up the subtitles if you struggle with a particular sentence. MPV and VLC have subtitle visibility shortcuts too, if you use those players.

Why does grammar get a bad rap? I mean, I acknowledge I'm a little autistic. But a lot of times if I read a grammar explanation about my TL, I'm like "oh, THAT'S why they are saying it that way". Like it just makes more sense after a grammar explanation. Basically, is grammar underrated?

I think that's a sign that you consumed some content first before reading the grammar, which I think is the better way to do it.
The problem is that classes/teachers want to teach lots of grammar upfront, before you even see any of it in actual content, and force you to memorize it. This is why teaching yourself is better, nobody knows better than you how well you understood a word or a sentence, and if you only look up grammar and vocab when you don't understand, you're way more efficient than someone sitting through all that shit in a classroom.

I don’t honestly care (I’m a woman with no life), I’m happy there are free videos since some have paid non live courses they make you which is the exact same thing. Thanks YouTube. You could try italki too, it’s not that cheap for 1 live course and they give you extra exercises for practice/organize how you work

Just installed Lute.
This shit is actually clunkier than just using calibre lol.
Anything other than wiktionary is like ah yes a new window...

Reasonably speaking, where should you be at skill wise if its been 3 years since you started learning your target language? I started Spanish 3 years ago and I can understand a lot but I can't exactly express myself sometimes when speaking. I am learning in a very weird way also. I basically learn via massive input and interacting with my friends who speak Spanish. I don't do massive translations but I will translate really obscure words if I can't infer what it means by context. Overall, I am having a lot of fun learning. The main reason I wanted to learn this way is to avoid burnout. I never get burned out but I feel my learning is slower because I don't do grammar drills etc. Is this a okay way to learn or am I somehow gimping myself?

You make progress relative to the amount of good hours put in.
You can say 3 years, but how many hours in those 3 years have you actually spent on the language?

I basically practice every day deliberately and passively. I pretty much only listen to Spanish music and I try to even type basic things in Spanish like if I have to look something up etc. Then there is speaking practice with my friends. I think my biggest weakness is actually probably grammar and unfamiliar conjugations.

More reading done. Have had breakthroughs lately with confident scanning of sentences using the typical grammar/syntax of this work. Finding myself mainly naturally reading now, and then just going back to double check vocab/inflections I was uncertain on.
I spent some time today reading random chapters of a latin textbook someone gave me called "An Introductory Latin Course" by a Robert Zaslavsky, published within the past 10 years. It basically seems to be Wheelock but with more overt explanations, reading the preface it sounds like the intent was to make it a little smoother for modern American students who may lack a formal grammar education, and/or homeschoolers/autodidacts. Otherwise the book is formatted basically the same and even covers the same topics in the same order of lessons for at least the first 6 or so chapters. I feel like a major benefit of Lute has been that I can do a lot of reading volume, like 5 hours, and then all of the sudden get a massive amount of benefit from just reading through a grammar textbook without doing the exercises for like 30 minutes. I think I will take the time to grind all the exercises in this or Wheelock when I get farther along and want to try my hand at composition, if ever.
