I just came back from Istanbul and I can say that there’s nowhere else in the world besides maybe North Korea where a human being is as worshipped. Everywhere you turn there are Ataturk photos and statues. It’s not merely that they honor him and respect him as the founder, he is deified in the way that Roman imperial cults did for their leaders. I can’t imagine doing the same to George Washington for example even though it would make just as much sense

The problem is that it makes Turks a bit hypocritical in how they argue for secularism because essentially their state ideology of Ataturk-worship and republicanism is a religion. They’re just as zealous towards Ataturk as Muslims are towards Islam. On one hand this is a smart way to channel religious energy towards something more secular instead of trying to abolish the impulse entirely which would never for Muslims —- but on the other hand it creates the exact same issue that religious zealotry does since you can’t question Ataturk or try to improve upon his foundations. Young people in Turkey especially are incapable of moving on from an ideology from the 1920s even though we are in the 21st century, because they have to worship one man and treat him as perfect

ataturd was part of clique named the young turks. TYT forcefully kicked out tyrant named sultan abdulhamid from power in 1913. however under TYT rule ottoman empire lost balkans and joined ww1. TYT massacred christians of anatolia. Didn’t he also sideline the people that introduced him to the nationalist cause after taking power? I read that people like Rauf Orbay and Kazim Karabekir thought that he was going too far with his vision for Turkey. He exiled Orbay and wanted to execute Karabekir after the failed assasinatiom attempt on him in Izmir and he closed the first opposition party too.
