I just assumed it was the same system in Norway as it is here. I just tell the government how much my rent is, and they give me that amount to pay it. If it increased by £100 a month, I'd send them proofs of that, and they'd give me £100 month extra to pay it.

Americans are wrong, we are much similar to them than we are to Europe. But we still pay high taxes for our healthcare system, which is an utter failure and has collapsed. We have terrible healthcare, the money mostly goes to administrative bloat in the system, but people are still willing to pay the taxes because universal healthcare is a sacred cow in Canada and everyone is in denial about how the system has failed. IMO we should just get with reality and abolish "free" healthcare. We are no different than America and everyone should accept that.

The government only pay your rent here if you live in communal housing, as in property owned by the municipality/government.
