it's also just the nature of the SF mayor's position that he has far less power than, say, the mayor of NYC or LA. SF is far smaller, the power that Lurie has is more narrow. Lurie can't stop the people in Oakland acting like idiotic apes, he can't fix the roads, he can't make people in Redwood City build more housing

The college towns (missoula, boise, bozeman, etc) are all new construction and have grown really quickly over the last decade. they have literally no soul whatsoever. every single person you meet is a californian transplant or some retired meth addict or drunk.

life in the inland northwest isn't great. it's a lot like florida where you either have a lot of money and just sit on the lake in your boat all day or explore the forests all day or you are really struggling. it's not a place for people who know what they want to do with life

I’ve lived in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York, and Washington full-time and I’ve spent at least a month in pretty much all of the major cities. Pittsburgh was actually my favorite one by far. Yes, the weather is dog shit. Yes, the food is slop. Yes, the people are kind of fat and low brow sportsball cucks. But you know what? Pittsburgh has one thing no other city in America has right now:…normalcy. Pittsburgh is just fucking normal. The guys are normal, the girls are normal, the housing is normal, the job market is normal, the nightlife is normal. It’s just overall normal, which is decent, which is good. There are other cities that have this or that thing about it which is better than that respective thing is in Pittsburgh but every other city is in some way a fucking dystopia as well. It’s because after their parents’ favorite hives of San Francisco and Washington became intolerably expensive, their millenial kids went in search of cheaper and still walkable cities with quaint old buildings and coffee shops. That’s why R*ddit likes it. But the tech bros showed up because Pittsburgh became a popular hub for training AI and other tech that worked with industrial or logistical products, mostly because of the history. The choice was another rust belt city, which they all suck, Philly, which is infested with black Muslims, or Pittsburgh so the choice was easy. The natural gas boom also played a role.

Nobody lives downtown. I checked the census data a couple days ago, and the entire downtown had a population of just 4000. It may look like a piece of manhattan, but It's just offices that are now mostly vacant after covid. Most of the suburbs are absolutely decrepit looking.
