Modern war is, because of what you mentioned. Skill, guile, instinct, are no longer very useful. The scale is industrial and the deaths are mostly due to artillery, bombings, random events.
2,000 years ago it was more natural. The heroic, athletic, capable, skilled were generally successful and rewarded for it. War was a legitimate career and a pathway to nobility. A real PvP ladder. This is why the tone of literature on war has changed so dramatically as it's turned more into a soulless, anti meritocratic meat grinder.
