I have a penchant for reading war memoirs and the two most common themes:
1. it's all luck, people survive or die based entirely on luck
2. incompetent superiors kill their own soldiers with their incompetence and the soldiers often know they were destined for slaughter

War is horrible.

Just remember that people on the internet love to exaggerate and act cool, whenever you hear news about these kind of things the best thing to do is to avoid shitposters and wait for non-sensationalized reports

Modern war is, because of what you mentioned. Skill, guile, instinct, are no longer very useful. The scale is industrial and the deaths are mostly due to artillery, bombings, random events.

2,000 years ago it was more natural. The heroic, athletic, capable, skilled were generally successful and rewarded for it. War was a legitimate career and a pathway to nobility. A real PvP ladder. This is why the tone of literature on war has changed so dramatically as it's turned more into a soulless, anti meritocratic meat grinder.

The cognitive dissonance now is because men are still born with instinct and desire for war. This was valuable and evolutionarily ideal in a normal meta where we fought with fists and simple tools like swords and spears. You wouldn't want to be the one who shied away from battle back then, that guaranteed your failure. It's deeply ingrained in us.

But the pace of tech has progressed to rapidly that it far outpaced our instinct. War now is absolutely terrible, and there are no positive benefits for wanting to run to the front. You just die. So much genetic waste and lost opportunity.
