There are fully offline, open-source solutions if you don't trust any of these companies (and you can still manage your own syncing solution if you have multiple devices - KeepassXC + SyncThing is a popular combination). Although these companies are supposedly audited and it really doesn't make sense for their business model to not do what they say. And even if they did get hacked and hackers could access all the password databases of their customers, they'd still need the master passwords before they can get any of the other passwords inside the db.

Yes. A password manager is encrypted on disk (or in the cloud). So if someone pulled the hard drive out of your computer and plugged it into theirs, or they simply used your PC when you weren't looking, they could see your passwords easily in txt files. A password manager would stop them from seeing any passwords without the master password (and a separate key file if you want to be extra secure).

If your computer is connected to the internet then it is technically vulnerable. Granted, most regular home users probably won't get attacked unless they install dodgy software, fall for phishing scams or they are important enough to get specifically targeted by skilled threat actors. But if your computer ever did get compromised, searching for plaintext credentials is one of the first thing they'd do once they gained access.

Password managers also have other benefits, like being able to automatically generate complex passwords that you never need to remember. The most important thing is that you use a strong, unique password for every account you make, and pw managers assist with that greatly.
