it just occurred to me that non-asians are confused by asians using chopsticks to eat rice because non-asians tend to cook their rice in oil whereas asians eat steamed rice which makes them sticky.

here we always use some oil too, and it varies by household but we usually also add crushed garlic(most common) or onions or some artificial flavor packet.

I thought it was because Asians tended to use short-grain rice, which was inherently stickier and easier to grab with chopsticks?

yeah i have a rice cooker and whenever i give cooked rice to people they're like "ew! why is it sticky" and i'm like that's how is supposed to be the fuck u saying, what being used to paella does to a mf
my mom used to cook rice without washing it properly and adding oil and garlic
after living in Asia and eating actual rice i told her to never cook me that shit again

but still i don't think that's the main reason because in Korea they use spoon for rice, don't think there's more to it than tradition
only Chinese chopsticks i can understand because they're double the length of Japanese or Korean ones and it makes sense for Chinese style of sharing dishes and hotpot

There is a difference in the variety of rice. Long grain rice tends to stick together less, especially when some oil is added at the end of cooking.

Asians use short grain rice, which is much more glutenous and sticks together.
