Genetics do play a role but I don't think it's nearly as important as lack of a hygiene routine in most parts of the developing world

A huge part of this is that bathrooms in the developing world really suck. They have problems like no steam ventilation or no water pressure. People can't do laundry well since they don't have machines. There's just no culture about cleanliness

I have ethnic friends and we all used these makeup degreaser things the girls pulled out one time while hanging out for fun, and basically the paler people were the less greasy their pads were. It was like exactly 1:1. I don't think darker people smell worse though, but they get dry and/or greasy skin it seems. I have eczema and am more prone to skin cancer but can absorb nutrition from the sun more easily. There's probably other trade offs.

Haven't really noticed this apart from cases of cultural differences in the choice of scent.

For the same physical reasons that black absorbs light/heat, it also absorbs smell, while white reflects smell. You'll notice this too if you wear dark clothes vs light clothes, but smells stick to human bodies even more, being trapped on the brown people, while light-skinned people's scent fades more quickly

I had a friend from Bangladesh whose dad smelled like BO (even though he was rich). But the Bangladeshi son smelled less bad than the average guy if anything. His dad literally just didn't think BO was offensive so didn't care. He was actually a seemingly clean and organized man, he just didn't use deodorant.

I think western norms are more known and conformed to every year so don't deny this has been your experience. Frankly, I don't really notice how men smell unless they smell strongly.

For Africans, I think it's mostly due to oils and herbs they use for skincare, argan, myrrh and those kinds of things. Fairly common among people from the Middle-East as well.

I'm part southern Italian and my armpits smell absolutely biohazardous and radioactive at the end of the day. I never skip showers cause I feel so filthy. Usually when I rip my armpit hair out it mostly goes away, I think it's to do with the hair mostly.

I don't think it's the food but rather what they cook(the stench of the fumes while cooking sticks) and where they live.

I've sniffed(kek) a lot of indians in singapore who doesn't reek probably because they don't cook at all but rather buy their food in hawkers but there are also indians in singapore that smells like what you'd expect.

Some Jap friends thinks everyone on my hometown(countryside facing the pacific ocean with some fish and lobster port) smells like fish, probably because of the air but I can't smell it at all.

Americans are alright but I only knew a couple alcoholics.

French(all three that I've worked with) smells like sweaty armpit.
