To be honest we barely even know about him anymore because Patton got more of the glory, I think he has more asian fans at this point. But it would have been kind of based to actually kill Mao and restore ROC, and likely beneficial to the world long-term, don't think it was necessarily practical though. Nukes definitely changed how he thought about war on a profound level, because he was the one actually planning and who would have carried out that last push on the Japanese home islands, he was the guy estimating all the math in blood and souls ahead of time.
The thing was, though, Japan had been a democracy before the Axis, even if fairly briefly, the people already had precedent as long as the empire backed it (and he had no choice at all), whereas recent Chinese history was various usually bloody dictators and warlords and also Britain and refined opium and the opium war(s), so Mao offering something, anything, different than the usual caste systems seemed beneficial to a lot of people at the time, and for a lot of them, it actually did end up being beneficial.
