In reality what happened for the past few years was an ongoing proxy war between Israel and Iran. The Iranian proxies attacked Israel, Israel attacked them back and managed to attack Iran too, and Israel also supported (alongside Turkey, for different reasons) the regime change in Syria (which was an Iranian and Russian puppet under Assad).
Both sides are in a worse position now. Israel lost a lot of international support and is now more isolated than ever before while Iran spent a ton of resources and pretty much lost all the influence in Syria and Lebanon that they built over decades while dealing only minimal kinetic damage to Israel.
