Why is the UK completely fucked?

What seems cruel is just normal behaviour in the UK. If you see somebody struggling socially, you don't help them, just be thankful it's not you. You laugh and berate because somebody fumbled where you didn't. It's a superiority thing and the UK is built upon classism and social bullying.
