It's crazy because even the normalfags are watching subbed anime by default now. In the 2000s/2010s when they branched outside entry level slop like DBZ they would only watch dubbed anime but now kids and their parents are watchind subbed anime at home and in theaters.

You underestimate regular ass people. I can go on and on about how back in my day I had to get on IRC to download fansubs. Of course only nerds would watch it back then. But if it's presented to people as a choice is it shocking that they would rather watch it than the other garbage on Netflix? This was the dream of the community back then anyway. They didn't want anime to be less accessible to people. They didn't want it to be only available via piracy. As soon as something was licensed they would stop subbing it.
