And most people in Spain are not "Med" by looks or culture. Nothing wrong about this but it is reality.

The med is the birthplace of Europe, an ideal incubation zone for civilization. You have this shallow quiet sea that connects everything, you have mild climes, you have natural land barriers against foreign hordes. At the time, northern Europe was basically covered in ice, so nothing was possible up there. N. Africa hadn't been overrun by Arabs and subsaharans so it was just idyllic outpost city states populated by the same people that lived everywhere else around the med.
