From what I remember there paternal lineage is largely African mainlanders to compensate for this, soldiers, slaves, traders etc coming to madagascar, they mixed at first but at some point in the middle ages they became a highly stratified society and now mixing between the majority austronesian ethnic groups and the majority black ones is strictly verboten
