What lies deep within the hearts of most Japanese people is “indifference”—that's what I believe.
However, if they were certain they could help others through their own efforts, they might engage in hypocritical acts.
Incidentally, in my case, deep down I am indifferent to others' happiness or misfortune.
But I engage in hypocrisy because I believe that by being kind to others, my own environment will improve.
