Webster literally changed english in america to disassociate the new country from the brits.
american english is a phonetic simplification of british english.
Euros should still learn brit english since it's more common to meet brits in europe than americans.
>>215923441 >Euros have developed their own english lingo/accent
It’s not an accent at all. Every speaker retains their own accent. A Frenchman speaks with a French accent, a German with a German accent. And the “dialect” is just a bunch of false friends, mostly due to Romance speakers.

Maybe officially but textbooks often teach both or just American and teachers just speak regular English (i.e., no British accent). Everyone in my school bullied the kids who tried to force a British accent until they spoke neutral English in class.

Gen Z and Gen alpha speak English identically to what they see on instagram and tiktok, what they learn in school is irrelevant because nowdays everyone speaks English before they start learning it in school.
One of the huge points of General American is that it's, like, general. A billionaire and a redneck from Montana both speak with the same pronunciation. While RP is the London's accent and a plenty of people dislikes London.
>English is Illinois's official language. Illinois was one of the first states in the United States to pass an official language law, though its first official language was not English but 'American'. In 1923, Representative Washington J. McCormick of Montana had failed to pass a bill in the United States Congress declaring 'American' to be the official language of the United States. Following the bill's failure, Senator Frank Ryan introduced a similar bill to the Illinois General Assembly. The bill passed with the support of Irish and Jewish politicians in Chicago, who, by rejecting the term 'English', wanted to show their opposition to British policies in Ireland and Palestine, respectively

Because it's forced and unnatural. They also usually tried to sound posh, like they were emulating RP. >>215925507
It's not the standard version anymore.

Imagine if someone was bullied for learning Finnish without the vocal fry, because it sounded "unnatural". Would that make sense? >They also usually tried to sound posh, like they were emulating RP.
Sounds like they were committed learners. >It's not the standard version anymore.
Says who?

I'm not sure whether I should use British or American English. I kept British since the school for a while but then I switched to American because I thought I'll go there. Now I know I won't go there but the majority of people around me suggest to do American.
>>215926021 >I'm not sure whether I should use British or American English.
If you're straight, use British English, if you're gay, use American English
>>215926182
No it won't, the yanks love our accents, and interestingly even though we've been culturally cucked by them, they're more exposed to our culture than ever, you get Brits in a lot of American films and they're even aware of things like Greggs now.
>>215925941 >vocal fry
This is not a different accent of Finnish, it's just a personal difference. >standard version
Numbers? Anyway, you can't choose which language is the lingua franca, it's just whichever language happens to be dominant in trade, culture, business, etc.
>>215926064
Idk dude. I'd fuck a passing trans or even just a cute twink honestly. >>215926216 >economic reasons
Such as? >integrity and class
But Standard British is from London and I hate London because it reminds me of Moscow.
>>215926284
Your island has like 1000 accents and nobody but Brits can tell them apart. Most people hear someone from cockney, Manchester, Liverpool, or Birmingham and think "yep that's British". They don't make a distinction for class or regional dialect. Its really something only your own people understand
>>215926337
You'll simply have more opportunities with American English. In media and most businesses and jobs. Its become ubiquitous and familiar to most of the world. >integrity and class
Standard British English is currently (and has mostly been) in a better state than American English. The rules are more rigid and it encourages a stronger vocabulary. The standards of American English are rather poor, even institutionally. DEI, nigs, and other cultural reasons.
>>215926390
I have a strong ear and am a native speaker but I'm telling you most people cannot. The best most people can do is pick out an accent from continent to continent, and even then people think Australian/NZ sounds British. Having such a strong cultural inclination to observe distinctions in accent is very much a British thing.
>>215926452 >DEI, nigs, and other cultural reasons
Isn't it the opposite though? I perceive American as white, rural, and authentic and American as globohomo, pozzed, and libshit.
>>215926575
I agree partially, most ESLs can only pick up which country someone is from because they don't have that knowledge, but Britain has the largest diversity in dialects. Just compare a London, Birmingham, Welsh, and Northern Irish accent. Americans are the ones that are obsessed with making their accents super important even though they're barely different. >Oh my god my Wisconsin accent is craaaazyyyy like ugh, I say goin' instead of going!!!!!
>>215926701
I assume you meant to say British in the first half. Yeah the country is fucked but their standards for English in an institutional capacity is higher. Seems to be a cultural issue. Speaking refined proper English is seen as a requirement for the upper classes. In America this is much less so. >>215926686
I'm telling you brother most people see that just go "yep that's a Brit, maybe he has a cold"
>>215926955
I'm not from flag friendo. Although the education here is quite good, wouldn't discount it. Average Serb knows 2 or 3 languages, can name every capital of every country in the world, and usually has some specialized training. So be nice. You would be hard pressed to say the same or American or Britain. I would know, I'm from one of those
>>215925507
Britishers will bully and hate ESLs if we speak English with bad pronunciation, meanwhile Americans will appreciate our broken English and don't mind about our ESLness
unlike europe, here we learn american english in the school (i learned it alone since the education system is terrible), i prefer british english accent, the english sounds nice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9POGYaDBww
>>215927807
I'm not talking about street yardie English all the darkies and chavs speak. I'm talking about English as an institution from the country's higher end educational systems and as a cultural value amongst middle and upper class people being better. No point in talking about the lowest common denominator they're all retarded.
>>215928272
Again, the American upper class who speak Standard American are white country ourguys while the British upper class who speak Standard Biritish are zogbots. So the perception is different and not in favor of the British.
>>215923554 >Everyone in my school bullied the kids who tried to force a British accent
This. It sounds so fake. You are not british stop trying to force it
