I think that a big factor for this is that hundred years ago most of a country's population was rural and if you needed to expand living space you would just build it on the plot of land you owned/rented. Or as you said just cram kids in the already existent rooms.
Nowadays most people are stuck in sub-par apartments where having even 2 children feels like stepping on each other's toes.

A typical 3-room apartment in the new projects consist of 2 small bed rooms and a joint kitchen/living room as the third, so you would need at least a 4 or 5 room apartment and those are both low in supply and more than proportionally more expensive.
