Let me chime in with this... In rural areas where tourists don't frequent they probably don't know or even care. In larger cities especially with the increase tourism I think they are aware of how tall westerners generally are and how short they are in comparison. I would say most are more impressed by the amount of food we eat in a sitting than our height. Although I can tell you if you're around 6 foot tall you'll stand out like a sore thumb in Japan. In our company we share notes with visitors from other offices in the US and Europe to note which hotels to avoid because the ceiling heights are so low and the showers so tiny that its honestly uncomfortable. Its not until you've had to walk bent over inside a business or hotel room that you really realize how short Japanese are but modern and new buildings are much better in this regard.
