Ghanesh is the god of worldly things. He is represented by the ass chakra muladhara which represents strength and appetite. Muladhara is the base of all other chakras and the only one the average person is said to utilize in general.
It is base instinct, for reference second chakra up is the bladder/womb/genital chakra and deals with sexual desires and various urges beyond survival.
So since they are told they can't really accend up the chakras unless they're a priest or devotee of some kind, the common people worship Ghanesh along with the principal gods of their particular sects, Vishnu or shakti or so on, along with various others based on their specific domains or just because they're fan favorites.
