Leaves have tannins and will kill smaller plants and grass, you have to move them to a place where they can compost in peace. I usually move them to the side of my garden. I also use cut grass for mulching

Trees prefer this tasty treat over their own yucky dead leaves

No I shred them into the ground with the lawn mower, but because I have dozens of large oak and maple trees when they start to fall a lot, i shred and pile them then use them as mulch/compost in the vegetable garden.
