Cults are a huge problem in Japan. The Korean Moonies, also know as the "Unification Church", an Evangelical Korean cult that had strong ties to Abe and other LDP higher ups.
Abe's assassin Tetsuya Yamagami's mother inherited a hotel business from his grandfather and then proceeded to crash it to the ground while "donating" hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Moonies. Yamagami and his siblings lived their childhoods in poverty because of their mother's actions, and Yamagami at one point in his early 20's even contemplated committing suicide to cash in on his life insurance so that his starving younger siblings could get money for food.
But he didn't kill himself, instead he planned revenge on the Moonies and everyone who gave them power, and that included President Shinzo Abe, eventually assassinating him in 2022. This assassination shone a glaring spotlight on the problem of cults in Japan, and many other victims of cults in Japan expressed an outpouring of support for Yamagami, to the point where prosecutors delayed his trial (It will only start at the end of October of this year, 3 years after the assassination) because they were afraid public sentiment would exonerate him or only punish him lightly. Overnight the subversive influence of the Moonies on Japanese society shot up in the awareness of the public. Yamagami's assassination of Abe is probably the most successful assassination in history, and I can't wait to watch the anime directed about Yamagami's life and revenge. I regard Yamagami as a hero and I hope he's exonerated.
