What are the cons of trying to speak with the British accent instead of the American one?
I just played Slay the Princess and the British accent of the male voicer sounds so much better than the American accent of the female voicer so I'm confused once again. It does sound more elite.

Yes. Learning pre-Pāṇinian Vedic with full accentuation, then memorizing the Aṣṭādhyāyī sūtras in metrical order and actually deriving forms by explicit rule enumeration. “Sanskrit” as taught to humanities undergrads is a light, deodorized version
I have the C and the J to a good enough level for my goals (HSK4 and ~N3/N2).
Should I learn the K to complete the trifecta of popular asian languages despite not really caring about the peninsula at all, or should I learn a SEA language (mainly Vietnamese or Indonesian - dont care about the others if I am honest) ?

lindie botes? also yeah, afrikaans is dutch (simplified) but it has some really unique quirks and i find it generally to be quite a pleasant language. funnily enough, spoken afrikaans is harder for me to understand than spoken dutch.
one thing that boggles my mind with afrikaans is that they do double negatives, but not in a way i've ever seen before:
>A particular feature of Afrikaans is its use of the double negative. For example,
>Afrikaans: Hy kan nie Afrikaans praat nie. (lit. >He can not Afrikaans speak not.)
>Dutch: Hij kan geen Afrikaans spreken.
>English: He cannot speak Afrikaans.
they just append another "no" to the end of the sentence for good measure. it seems so unlikely to me that this would happen in a language that i never considered that's one way you can do it... for whatever reason...
>Ek het nie geweet dat hy nie sou kom nie.
i mean based, but seriously man, why...

>Knowing an English speaker wrote this without a dictionary or reference with little to no struggle, what level would you expect him to be at in Polish?
Judging by the photo, the writer’s Polish is quite strong — around B2 (upper-intermediate) on the CEFR scale, possibly even approaching C1 in writing comprehension.
Here’s the reasoning:
Strengths
• Grammar control:
Uses correct cases and verb forms most of the time (e.g. “[redacted]” — perfectly natural).
• Natural phrasing:
Expressions like “[redacted]” and “[redacted]” sound fluent and idiomatic.
• Spontaneity:
The flow of thoughts feels natural and unforced — something an advanced learner can only do after a lot of exposure.
• Style awareness:
The tone shifts smoothly between reflective (“[redacted]”) and casual (“[redacted]”), showing good command of register.
Small hints of non-nativeness
• A few slightly off or mixed structures (e.g. “[redacted]” might more idiomatically be “[redacted]”).
• Occasional unusual phrasing or missing diacritics, but nothing major.
>there are no missing diacritics, just shitty handwriting
• Handwriting suggests thinking in Polish rather than translating, yet there’s a faint trace of English sentence rhythm.
Estimated level
Skill CEFR
Reading C1: Understands structure and idioms
Writing B2–C1: Can express nuanced thoughts naturally
Speaking (likely) B1–B2: Written fluency often exceeds spoken
Listening B2: Can probably follow native speech with some effort
In short: the writer is a confident, independent user of Polish — likely B2+, possibly C1 in writing, especially impressive for someone working without a dictionary.

I still can't mentally join HK cinema of late 90s - early 00s with mainland Chinese cinema. I know Chinese themselves do it and they're technically right with things released after the handover, but the tradition involved in the filmmaking is very different. Like Stephen Chow's comedies for example, building on Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung's style rather than China's stuff of the period, or Wong Kar-wai building something that's closer to his Taiwanese contemporaries.

This is because during the 90s and 00s censorship standards were very strict and private funding for films didn't exist in China. If you wanted to make a film you either had to make nationalist/patriotic stuff to get party funding or make a film that foreign audiences would pay for.
So filmmakers basically specialised into the festival market and made stuff like Suzhou River that turns the poverty porn up to 11 so the westies would lap it up

I like to fantasize about doing that. But I think it's such an ambitious goal, you would have to give up on the idea of learning any other language if you want to be even close to fluency in all three CJK.
Maybe if I had yellow fever and plans to live in those countries I would actually do it.
Instead I'll be doing European languages probably for the rest of my life, and try to reach an acceptable level in Japanese so I can get by as a tourist there and play some obscure old vidya and VNs that never got translated.

the cases in german are harder than other languages with them imo because most of the time they're only marked on articles/adjectives/determiners. on the nouns themselves most of the time the cases look identical. also there's three different declensions for adjectives depending on the definiteness of the noun.

Yes the first time I learned about German grammar I thought that German speakers must have computer brains to be able to encode/decode this shit.
But with any complicated grammar it becomes easier when you've seen all of the common examples hundreds of times and they become really familiar, then you just need to memorize the exceptions. At some point when speaking you will just have to pause when using something uncommon (like using an adjective with the genitiv case) and think for a second about how its supposed to sound. But even native speakers pause sometimes in order to say something more correctly.

I also decided Japanese first. Ill probably introduce Korean next if I ever can, but Mandarin undeniably has its benefits. If you got the yellow fever (I do, very badly) it unlocks the most asian females, by a huge margin. And good preparation for the China takeover.

Yes and no. Arrests have already been made over things the government didn't like (mainly LGBT stuff).
A lot of web novels are either Xianxia, Xuanhuan or Wuxia. If not those, its some esports shite or some porn.
They have some good Kehuan (sci-fi) ideas sometimes though - and this is honestly where I see them potentially breaking into the market more.

I finally finished a page of japanese. I also just finished Pimsleur level 1 and have gotten through hand making anki decks for the top 125 dictionary entries in the routledge frequency dictionary. What I really love about the routledge dictionary is it actually counts all tokens so I'm getting the critical grammar necessary for an agglutinative language by studying the most frequent vocab. It feels like the opposite of Latin where frequency study is almost useless and grammar is more front-loaded since agglutinative languages use relatively consistent morphemes across words while inflected languages change their words more internally. So it begins. I'm hoping by the time I reach 500 words or so in my routledge dict things will open up substantially, or at least by 1,000.

It started to disappear because the scandinavians in the danelaw couldn't form all of the sounds and started confusing certain cases together. The genitive lingered into the early middle english period and eventually morphed into the 's ending in English. I'm not sure if the French had much influence on this considering the work I'm aware of that lacked all but the genitive was written less than a century after William I, and AFAIK the drops conform more to gaps between old english and old norse than to gaps between norman and old english.

For those of you who are native English speakers but learned multiple languages in different families/subgroups, did you notice a difference in how locals respond to learners?
For me it was very difficult to get Germans to speak German with me when I was living there. No fault of their own, because for the sake of pragmatism as soon as they heard my accent they switched to English. Understandable, but frustrating.
However, when I went to Spain, Spaniards were very receptive and would constantly glaze my mediocre Spanish. It was much easier to improve my listening and speaking there because they were much more willing to go out of their way to speak their language with me.

Well if you read the authors from that period when they quote from Latin and Ancient Greek they quote without translating because they could read both.
At the very least since they’re literary languages the mental taxation of getting to an intermediate level is them is less than people expect.
>>216044679
I was thinking of trying Latin for that reason, though if I do it will be after French, German, and Japanese (the one I'm currently focusing on).
I was thinking mainly in the vein of enlightenment thinkers like Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Frederick the Great, Voltaire (though I don't really like him), Amaury de Riencourt, Rene Guenon, and to a lesser extent people like Lovecraft and Rudyard Kipling. People who had a wide range of knowledge instead of only knowing one subject. Most of them knew French since it was the lingua franca of the time, a few knew Latin or Greek, Hamilton knew Hebrew, Kipling knew Hindi. I like how some people around that time tried to compare eastern and western philosophies and religions. Riencourt focused on China and Guenon on the middle east.

im not saying you can't or shouldn't learn languages later, just the reflexive 'lol just go learn it yolo' advice is stupid. If you're 22, already have a career (are a mechanic or whatever and are skilled at it), live in a family house, then yeah you have all the time you want to learn whatever you want, and the ROI is really high at that age because you'll have access to it for the rest of your life. If you're 34 and your career is at the risk of becoming obsolete (happening a lot lately) then it's not a good time investment, language learning takes forever, youre better off learning something else

Instruction in geometry, math, philosophy, theology, etc. for much of Europe’s elite still involved or was even primarily in these languages for later than people realize.

These sorts of pics would be much easier for beginners to understand if they made these in "Masculine, Neuter, Femine, Plural" order that all Finnish materals for German I've seen use. It's giga easy to understand since instead of seeing four completely different sets of articles for each gender and case, you see that Masculine and Neuter have the same Genetive and Dative, Feminine and Plural have the same Nominative and Accusative, and the further left you go, the simpler the articles get.

I assume most thinkers who knew Latin around that time didn't really speak it and mainly used it for reading, something akin to how we learn to read a little Shakespearean English in school, plus it helped that they already knew modern romance languages. In particular, Thomas Jefferson was a huge Francophile and US minister to France (he also supported the early stages of the French Revolution before all the killing), while Frederick the Great preferred French to his native German since France was the center of high culture. Most of the Russian nobility also spoke French while Russian was for the peasantry.
I'm hoping that after I learn French, learning basic Latin will be very quick, but it isn't my priority. Asian languages are more important now than back then, so Japanese is replacing Greek for me. Anything worthwhile in Greek is translated anyways. Any language after JP, French, and German is optional for me.

In particular, Thomas Jefferson was highly proficient in Latin and Greek and is quoted as reading extensively in both pretty much daily.
Really, a lot of translations of classic texts were not so widely available, or extant at all, in this period. If an author references a classical author they probably either heard about it through an intermediary, or they read the original latin. As late as Cecil Rhodes, he had to pay to have a private library of english classical translations produced in secret so he could become well read in the classics, due to his lack of formal education which he was greatly ashamed of (since it was so universal among the elites at the time).

If you can't take a conlangs core vocab and insert whatever verb/noun loanwords from English (or any other language) to make intelligible sentences that cover the full core of basic grammar and expression, it's not a complete language.
Unfortunately most conlangs have words for swords and obscure fantasy dishes because they exist more as linguistic art projects than anything.
Your conlang would benefit more from a word for "however/although/but" than from having a word for "nonbinary" (toki pona)

Welding here is often done as a part time course over a single academic year (roughly 8/9 months) as part of some fabrication btec.
Thats often like 4 hour school days at a college.
If you can't put even 30 minutes towards your language learning after that, you're just a lost cause.

I see. In any case, you should still learn something beyond the language itself. Imagine someone who knows German but can't weld, or doesn't understand tax law, or Portuguese but can't kick a ball and twerk, or French and don't smoke. Such person could speak the language at native level and still be an outcast. A total laughing stock
