Ford convinced industrialists that 8 hours is more efficient so you worked 8 hours. Now Musk is convincing industrialists that you can fire 80% of their workers and have the rest work 10 hours, so the industrialists are following that.
If technology brought less work, we would be working less today than in post-Ford times, but we are not, in fact the trend is reversing (still not to the level of early industrial revolution)

We do work far less. Don't confuse "sitting at a desk pretending to work for 8 hours a day" with actual work. People did used to actually work. They were all very tired because they were doing real things. Now those jobs are rare and the default is a bizarre form of fake work that most do. We are expending like 1/10th the joules of a human from 1910.
