Why are Americans so weird with religion? I'm not even talking about how they mangled Protestantism into the weird evangelical mess they have, they have so many weird cults that they even export to other countries like Jehovah's Witnesses. And it's not even Protestant Christianity that they're weird about. Every religion: Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Islam, Judaism etc. It all feels very weird and... Fetishistic, for lack for a better word?
I'm not even trying to bait here, why is it like this?

It's effectively a state-sponsored action and the Orthodox Church in Russia is pretty much dead. These things are seen as wild and weird here as well but you're not gonna hear that in western sources. Nobody largely cares about religion here anymore if you're wondering.

Interesting topic, though I suspect the answer is the same as to why they do anything strange. The eternal American struggle between lack of identity and individual obstinacy.
