It's not that hard unless you're memorizing words in isolation. Read short texts that are at your level and review them multiple times until they become trivial. The more texts you read, the more meaningful connections get made and you even start to anticipate the meaning of words you've never seen before.

Literally the second I can avoid the urge to be a dabbler I start making noticable progress. I started all this by getting a Japanese anki deck maybe 1.5 years ago, dropping it within a month, doing Latin, dropping it within 2 months, doing Mandarin, dropping it after 4 months, doing Japanese for 2 weeks dropping it for Korean for a month, then deciding I needed to wholly remove practicality from the equation, so I went back to Latin fully, reaching an intermediate reading ability after a few more months, then and now finally starting up Japanese again a couple weeks ago.

I’d say the biggest shift is that Latin grammar study has given me much mor metalinguistic knowledge and endurance for struggle. Also because I got Latin ti a point where I could mostly read the vulgate extensively it means I can actually productively “maintain” my Latin by just filling out the occasional grammar table and reading a couple bible chapters a day or LLLPSI once in a while, where before the knowledge wasn’t comprehensive or locked in enough for me to read anything. So the difference now is I can go to Japanese without actually abandoning Latin, since I am at a stage where the best thing I can do for my Latin is just casual reading anyways.

You can learn some stuff with it, or at least used to be able to. Its very inefficient way to learn, but progress still can occur.
The problem is their monetisation methods make using it even more of a pain in the ass.

So hence it is both inefficient to use, and more egregiously is a pain to use unless you want to give them money.

Which if you are giving money to something, there are countless other better materials to buy (or better yet just steal them).

Mandarin actually has pretty simple grammar, right? The main thing that makes it difficult is the tones and the characters? Not like korean/japanese with the complicated grammar and agglutination? If so, I'm a musician (used to sing in professional choirs) and have no trouble with pitch. e.g have no trouble distinguishing pitch accent in japanese that a lot of people have trouble with - if I were to learn mandarin just by speaking with chinese people (no reading, no learning characters) could I potentially do it much quicker than the FSI estimates suggest?

Tones and characters being hard are beginner-level problems that you'll get over in a year or two. The more characters you learn the easier it is to remember new ones, also character recognition is super easy the hard part is writing.
Grammar is more difficult than like Spanish but still pretty easy. The hard part is remembering all the patterns and structures and how to use them, but that's not super hard.

At higher levels the difficult things are
>Words with multiple meanings
>Pairs or groups of words with very similar meanings i.e. 经验 经历
>Chengyu (four characters phrases)
>Dialects and slang, there's way too much of this
>The difference between literary/spoken language

Anonymous United Kingdom No.216081460 [Report] >>216081641

Generally I think its better to start your 2nd one once you are moderately competent in your first, so its easier to maintain it.
If you are learning two new ones at the same time progress is likely going to be slower, unless you can consistently match what your upper limit of time allocation would be for both of them.
Most I have done simultaneously was 3, where it was 2 from scratch while maintain 1 at a B2ish level. One of them would regularly get neglected, but it was fun.

As I said earlier, comprehensible input is supposed to be comprehensible. If you're watching children's shows, that already implies some degree of fluency with the language (on the level of the children who watch those shows). If you're an absolute beginner you don't even have that level of fluency yet, so you need to watch videos that are designed with learners in mind because they will provide you with visual aids and they will speak clearly and slowly so that you begin to inuit things and vocabulary and the "sound" of the language becomes engrained in your mind. When you approach CI by watching videos where you can understand 80-90% of what's being said, you will find that you will quickly progress and things will become easier and easier and then with a bit of time you'll hit the a more intermediate level where you can just start watching media in your TL. In the beginning, you basically have to approach it like you're a baby learning words from your parents except you have the faculties and capabilities of an adult to help you more quickly learn the language.

The drawback of CI is that it takes some skill and adequate resources to make good CI content. Most people aren't great at making CI videos and groups like Dreaming Spanish are few and far between. I will tell you from my experience that, while it is indeed very slow, any input and immersion you can get does help, even if you can't undertstand all of it. Maybe try mixing up proper CI content with content that you find interesting or entertaining so you get a bit of both. And if you decide to use a popup dictionary, try and only look up words that you absolutely need to know the definition of in order to understand what's going on and try and intuit the definition whenever possible. It's easier than you think if you just trust your brain to make the right guess.

Interesting content is important. I learned German basically on accident in my late teens. I was obsessed with some german singers/bands and would memorize all their songs and watch all their interviews. This was back before there were automatic english translations for everything, so there were no subtitles, so I would just sit there with google translate in a separate window and try to type what the words sounded like until I figured out what was being said. I wasn't even trying to learn German, I was just really interested in the musicians and wanted to know what they were saying.

imo thats super critical for language learning. kids statistically forget almost everything they forget in school, because the information feels disconnected so eventually gets dropped out of the brain. If you're watching content where you're really motivated to understand what's being said (and don't just slap NL subtitles on it) you can progress very quickly

You'll need more input than that before you can understand natives or speak with confidence. When you get to around 500-600 hours of input, you should have plenty of interesting native content available to you. With only 1hr/day for 6-8 months, you'll still solidly be in learner content territory

>reviews are all people claim it's shit for not teaching enough speaking and shilling their speaking-based courses and tutoring

Shows made for children are still made for natives. A 5 year old native speaker has 5 years of listening to the language under his belt. A 5 year old can regular use ~2500 words, and can recognize twice to three times as many. And another big difference is that they learned to recognize those words primarily by sound, whereas second language learners typically have much more experience with the word in written form. So it makes sense that you struggle to understand TV that children can understand. That's why you have to use stuff designed for learning.

Continuing to chug along in chunks through my frequency dictionary. I will go straight into Japanese with the Ribingu biberu (bible) and anime or I will die trying. I will not use CI Japanese. I will not watch peppa pig.

My issue with CI is that watching materials I am disinterested in IS STUDYING and it feels like it. So if I spend an hour sort of getting chunks of anime that takes no time from my hour of direct study, but if I do an hour of CI stuff I will not want to do any other direct study that day, so I might as well do direct study.

>Isekai ojisan (too difficult, don't recommend until later levels)
>Some of Yowamushi Pedal (Decent immersion but I didn't really enjoy it)
>Bocchi the Rock (Recommend)

Now I'm doing VNs. This isn't anime but I watched a few episodes of Terrace House: Opening New Doors and it was alright. I'm not a fan of dramas but it was good immersion for everyday conversation. I know german, used to be a huge germanophile and even lived there for a while. It's been infected in recent years like the rest of the world. There's porn culture, talk of 'toxic masculinity', identity politics, one of the highest per capita concentrations of trannies, normalization of bdsm, gender hostility, gender ideology, increase in selfishness and individualism, brainrot, etc. It was great 10-15 years ago but not so much anymore. I'd still much rather live there than the US, but, if you want to get away from that kind of shit asia is your only option
(although asia has its own cultural baggage like confucianism/age relations/etc. there's nowhere in the world anymore thats just cool and chill, everywhere is fucked up in one way or another.)

Look up basic information regarding natural law and legal positivism and have a discussion about that. Its very easy for you to argue, even without jurist knowledge, if you believe that legal/moral principles (such as if stealing / murder is inherently bad) exist innately (natural law) or if we are inherently born in a tabula rasa type of way regarding that sort of thing and the only thing that governs us is what is posited by authorities in forms of laws etc (legal positivism).
