I think one of the reasons is its climate and cultures adopted to it.
the west and japan belong to different climates strictly, but still closer than drylands, tropical wetlands, and nomadic lands that occupy majority of the world.
we are often obsessed with Europe too.

Anime is the main form of non pornographic content for teenagers and young adults outside of tiktok and YouTube. Anime paints a rose tinted picture of Japan, people feel like they're actually learning about Japan when they watch it, and the picture they're being painted is amazing.

The biggest mistake the west did was having a harsh entertainment gap between content for kids, teenagers, and adults.

I went to Japan a few weeks ago and the thing I liked more than any of the cultural stuff or whatever is the following
>trains were almost always on time, people got on and off in an orderly manner, unlike here

I'm in Japan.
Here are some general observations:
- Very mature economy and political system. You can feel the country has been industrialized for over 100 years. Very similar to Europe in terms of system and institutions.
- Strong consumerism culture, much more than anywhere in Europe except England.
- Highly advanced public transportation and infrastructure.
- High standards of living. People live well in general. They like to sit in cafés, drink juice and read books for hours. You can feel a very relaxed atmosphere outside the centers.
- High culture. People are classy and well behaved. They are always conscious of their behavior, and careful not to make others feel uncomfortable. In general, people like to mind their own business.
- Very aesthetically pleasant country. People put strong emphasis on aesthetics and norms. They like to follow established norms, be it a 2000 year old tradition, or a recently made up rule.
- People have strong regional identity. They feel closer and identify first with their region.
- People are very encouraging of others. There's a culture of encouragement that's reflected in their marketing style. You see a lot of posters, ads and other marketing slogans that have a very motivational theme. In comparison, creative humor was the main theme behind marketing in England.

The Japanese were the first non-Western nation to successfully modernize, and they did it very early. Westerners took a strong interest in Japanese culture since then. For a long time it was basically the only modern non-Western country. Though it's changing nowadays.
