They were until New Spain ended. Mexico was more developed than the US prior to the 20th century. There's a reason the US uses dollars instead of pounds, the original British colonies used the pound, but because of how much trade was going on with Spanish colonies the dollar surpassed it in usage and eventually replaced it entirely.

Richer in what way? In Silver and gold that was all shipped to spain? Or an abundance of cash crops that were made by slaves? I doubt the average person was any better off than in north americs a not to mention they also had feudalism and a caste system in place.

Economics didn't work the same way as it does today, back then production capacity mattered far more than just population. The US had a 'modern' industrial base before the Spanish colonies did and New Spain was already in decline back then, still more developed in that it had better infrastructure, but they weren't industrializing at the rate the US was. The US basically leap frogged over them by being an early adopter.
