Sadly I don't think that's possible anymore these days, every darn service requires a phone number

This does not happen in my country. Even my old parents have smartphones now because every damn thing requires an app.

Yeah, so does my grandfather. He keeps telling me to get a phone to be available at all times but that's exactly what I want to avoid.

Telegram is to WhatsApp what BitChute is to Youtube. People look at it as this esoteric knowledge shit.

I dunno. Looking it up it seems iPhone to iPhone uses the iMessage system, otherwise it Android to iPhone or Android to Android used RCS or falls back to SMS/MMS.
Most Americans are just confused why you would download a separate app to text.
Only time i was ever asked about WhatsApp was some foreign student.

Everyone here uses either iMessage or whatever Google's equivalent is called, which are both web-enhanced versions of SMS/MMS and will still use them as a fallback if the web features don't work for whatever reason.
SMS was already extremely popular well before smartphones here and unlimited SMS has been a stock feature of phone plans here since the late 2000s so that's what everyone is used to

Over a decade ago, yea. My family was hella poor. When I moved to a bigger town in 5th grade and got introduced to my new class I was the only one there without a phone. A couple months later my parents were able to get me a tiny Nokia phone with a keypad so they'd have a way to call me in case of an emergency. Didn't have any internet at home either, I accessed it only in school and internet cafes. I did at least have a low end PC which my parents got from someone else, and I was able to get some pirated games through other people. I finally got a smart phone and home internet in my third year of high school. Naturally I was ridiculed a lot for all those years by other kids, and not being able to spend nights texting with people is a huge handicap in a teenage zoomer social life. But I didn't think it was a big deal, my parents gave me all they got. Other kids bitched and moaned despite having everything I dreamed of at the time
